A new podcast examines the perils of intense meditation

A new podcast examines the perils of intense meditation
The Financial Times podcast Untold: The Retreat investigates mental health risks at Vipassana meditation retreats run by the Goenka network. It's findings are that while meditation is widely seen as beneficial, some participants experience severe psychological distress, including psychosis, hallucinations, and extreme terror, sometimes requiring hospitalisation or even resulting in suicide.

Retreats involve intense schedules: up to 10 hours of daily meditation, restricted sleep, minimal meals, and sensory isolation. Reporter Madison Marriage found that even previously healthy individuals can experience severe mental breakdowns, with staff often encouraging participants to continue meditating rather than addressing distress. Experts suggest that sleep deprivation, sensory restriction, and fasting, rather than meditation itself, may trigger these adverse effects. Participants and families recommend better warnings, on-site mental health support, and emergency protocols.

While many benefit from Vipassana, the podcast highlights the urgent need to prevent harm in extreme meditation settings.
